Latest QuickLook / Quartz Composer Compatibility Notes

GrabberRaster and GrabberWindow can utilize an optional "driver shim" file named GrabberRasterInput.plugin (CoreImage Image Unit). This driver shim exports the camera output from the grabber into a live feed compatible with QuickLook (Finder preview) and QuartzComposer compositions. In Leopard and Snow Leopard, prior to late revisions of Snow Leopard (10.6.8), it was recommended that these optional driver components be installed here:

/Library/Graphics/Image Units

However, starting with 10.6.8 and Mountain Lion, the individual user's Library folder is now the recommended installation location for these drivers:

/Users/me/Library/Graphics/Image Units

Mountain Lion Sandbox

GrabberRaster Lion Update/Fixes

GrabberRaster has been updated to version 1.703 with full support for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.

Corrects a problem where the screencasting and grab output was black (10.7 only).

GrabberRaster / Lion 10.7 Compatibility

STATUS: FIXED GrabberRaster versions 1.701 and earlier are not compatible with Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. We have identified the source of the problem and are working on a fix for it.

GrabberWindow functions correctly on 10.5 "Leopard", 10.6 "Snow Leopard" and 10.7 "Lion".

64-bit CoreImage and QuickLook

The new version of GrabberRaster features an updated CoreImage input component. This file (CIGrabberRasterInput.plugin) located in Leopard Goodies will share the output of the GrabberRaster grabbing rectangle as a live streaming video feed.

In the screenshot (at right), you can see the Grabber rectangle's contents reflected into the QuickLook preview in the Finder pane below. Essentially, any QuickLook enabled application (which includes sharing on iChat Theater), can accept the streaming output of GrabberRaster.

We have also issued updates for all our products with similar functionality.

Creating a Screencast Movie with Transparency

Now that we have VirtualEyes, it is possible to record a Screencast using GrabberRaster, and use the chroma-key feature of virtualize to automagically remove the desktop background and/or other regions of the screen from the GrabberRaster output.

1. Run GrabberRaster first and enable screencasting.
2. Start up VirtualEyes and use GrabberRaster as the camera input.
3. Set the keying mode to background removal or chroma-key to eliminate unwanted material.
4. Record the output with Quicky or similar movie recorder that supports a pre-multiplied alpha channel.
